Concept and structure of polarizer in liquid crystal display
Abstract: polarizer is one of the important materials of liquid crystal display. It is a composite material made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) tensile film and cellulose acetate film (TAC) through multiple compounding, stretching and coating processes, which can realize the characteristics of high brightness and high contrast of liquid crystal display. Polarizer accounts for about 10% of the cost of TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) panel.
Polarizer is one of the important materials of liquid crystal display, It is a composite material made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) stretching film and cellulose acetate film (TAC) through multiple compounding, stretching and coating processes, which can realize the characteristics of high brightness and high contrast of liquid crystal display. Polarizer accounts for about half of TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) is about 10% of the panel cost. Because its production technology integrates a variety of technologies such as polymer materials, microelectronics, optoelectronics, thin film, high-purity chemistry and computer control, polarizer has a high technical content.
The full name of polarizer should be polarizer. Those who have studied physics should know what polarizer is. The imaging of liquid crystal display must rely on polarizer. All liquid crystals have two polarizers close to the liquid crystal glass, forming a liquid crystal with a total thickness of about 1mm. If any polarizer is missing, the LCD cannot display the image.
Therefore, the reason for replacing the polarizer is that the polarizer facing the eyes of the ordinary LCD is frosted to dissipate the surface reflection and scatter the light to increase the viewing angle of the LCD. For the projector, any scattering will cause the loss of light. The ideal state of the LCD used in the projector should be 0 degree angle of view, that is, if you look at the LCD from the vertical direction, there will be no light. Of course, this is impossible to achieve, but the closer the angle of view is to 0 degrees, the higher the utilization rate of light. Therefore, after replacing the frosted polarizer with a flat polarizer, the brightness of the projector to the wall will be greatly improved. My personal estimation is that it can be increased by 50-80%, which is the reason why the polarizer should be replaced.
The earliest polarizer was mainly composed of PVA film which can produce polarized light in the middle, and then TAV protective film was compounded on both sides. In order to facilitate use and obtain different optical effects, the polarizer supplier shall, at the request of the LCD manufacturer, coat both sides with pressure-sensitive adhesive and then coated with release film. This polarizer is the most common TN ordinary full transmission polarizer. If a release film is removed and a reflective film is compounded, it is the most common reflective polarizer.
The pressure-sensitive adhesive used is high temperature and moisture-proof pressure-sensitive adhesive, PVA was specially impregnated (dye series products), the polarizer is a wide temperature type polarizer; the anti ultraviolet polarizer can be made by adding the component preventing the passage of ultraviolet rays into the pressure-sensitive adhesive used; the polarizer for STN can be made by compounding birefringent optical compensation film on the transmission original film; the polarizer for wide viewing angle or narrow viewing angle can be made by compounding light steering film on the transmission original film Angle polarizer; Coloring the pressure-sensitive adhesive, PVA film or TAC film used is a color polarizer. In fact, with the continuous development of new LCD products, there are more and more types of polarizers.
